PhoneArena is a digital media platform focused on smartphones and consumer technology, offering a mix of news, in-depth reviews, comparisons, and buying guides to help people understand and choose mobile devices. It covers everything from the latest phone releases and industry trends to detailed testing of cameras, battery life, and performance, while also providing tools that let users compare phones side by side. The site is designed for a broad, mostly mainstream audience looking for clear, practical information before making a purchase.

Opportunity

Opportunity

Millions of users, untapped engagement.

Millions of users, untapped engagement.

PhoneArena already had a highly engaged audience, reaching millions of users each month, with the majority of that traffic driven by strong Google SEO performance. Users were actively consuming content, commenting, and participating in discussions, but this engagement was largely unstructured and difficult to sustain over time.

At the same time, shifts in Google’s core updates were beginning to favor user-generated content, discussions, and community-driven signals. This introduced a new layer of opportunity. Instead of relying solely on editorial content, PhoneArena could strengthen its position by encouraging users to contribute more actively, turning discussions into a meaningful and scalable content layer.

From consumption to participation

From consumption to participation

This created a clear opportunity to transform passive consumption into active participation, and individual interactions into a more connected and self-sustaining community experience. By introducing gamification, we aimed to encourage repeat behavior, surface valuable contributions, and create a system where users felt recognized for their activity.

Gamification hadd the potential to become a tool for unlocking crowdsourcing at scale. By motivating users to return, engage, and contribute consistently, PhoneArena could amplify the volume and quality of community-generated content, aligning both with evolving search dynamics and long-term platform growth.

The challenge was to design a system that felt native to the existing experience, integrated seamlessly into familiar touchpoints, and could evolve gradually without disrupting how users already interacted with the platform.

Approach

Approach

A phased strategy

A phased strategy

Instead of introducing a fully developed gamification system from the start, we focused on building a progressive framework that could evolve alongside user behavior. We grounded our approach in existing patterns on the platform, such as reading articles and commenting, and looked for ways to reinforce them through recognition and feedback. The goal was to design a system that felt intuitive, required minimal effort to engage with, and could scale over time.

To achieve this, we structured the work in phases. We began with a lightweight MVP to validate interest and introduce the concept of recognition. Once validated, we expanded the system further, including reworking the user profile pages to create a dedicated space where progress, titles, streaks, and future achievements could live. This allowed us to support more complex gamification mechanics while maintaining a cohesive experience.

From there, we introduced streak-based features to encourage repeat behavior and habit formation, and explored ways to consolidate everything into a dedicated space, leading to the concept of a Community Zone as a central hub.

This phased approach allowed us to move quickly, learn from user behavior, and gradually build a more cohesive and engaging system without disrupting the existing experience.

MVP

MVP

Introducing recognition

Introducing recognition

To validate interest in gamification, we began with a lightweight MVP focused on user recognition. Rather than introducing a complex system upfront, we focused on a single, clear mechanic that could be easily understood and quickly adopted.

The MVP centered around user titles, assigned based on the number of comments each user had made. This allowed us to build on an existing behavior and turn it into something visible and rewarding, without requiring users to learn a new system.

To introduce this feature, we designed a pop-up onboarding flow that appeared to registered users.
This flow served two purposes:

  1. Notify users of the new recognition system.

  2. Assign titles (three levels, based on number of comments) to every registered user.

The titles appeared in user profiles (redesigned earlier), the comments section below articles, and dedicated discussions pages.

This MVP allowed us to test user interest and gather data. PhoneArena defined a subset of "loyal users" for measurement, and we set a target of % completion of the recognition flow, which we successfully reached.

Registered Users Flow

Non- Registered Users Flow

Beyond onboarding, visibility was a key part of the experience. Titles were surfaced across the platform, appearing in user profiles, within the comments section, and in discussion pages. This ensured that recognition was not only personal, but also social, reinforcing participation through visibility and status.

The MVP also served as a way to measure user interest. By tracking completion of the onboarding flow among a defined group of loyal users, we were able to assess whether the concept resonated. Reaching our target completion rate confirmed that users were receptive to recognition-based mechanics, giving us the confidence to expand the system further.

Laying the foundation

User Profile pages

User Profile pages

We began by redesigning user profile pages. This was the foundation where all gamification progress would live - titles, streaks, badges, and future achievements. Profiles needed to move beyond being static user records and become dynamic dashboards of community activity.

Community Zone page

In parallel, we created the Community Zone page - a dedicated hub for everything gamification and community-related. This serves as a central gateway where users can discover activities, track their progress, and engage with other community features.

Introducing "Streaks"

Introducing "Streaks"

Building habit through progress

Building habit through progress

Once the MVP validated interest in recognition-based mechanics, the next step was to encourage ongoing participation rather than one-time engagement. Streaks became a natural extension of this, shifting the system from static recognition to continuous behavior reinforcement.

We designed streaks around actions that already reflected meaningful engagement on PhoneArena, such as reading articles, posting comments, and returning to the platform regularly. Instead of introducing new behaviors, the goal was to strengthen existing ones, making them more consistent and visible over time.

With the foundation set, we moved on to streaks one of the most powerful gamification mechanics for habit formation. Inspired by platforms like Duolingo and Reddit, we tailored streaks to PhoneArena's ecosystem:

  • Daily Article Read Streaks (7 days → Bronze badge, 30 days → Silver, 100 days → Gold).

  • Comment Streaks (rewarding daily commenting with quality requirements).

  • Login Streaks (encouraging return visits).

Streaks were integrated into user profiles, comments, and discussions, reinforcing visibility and social recognition. They also introduced badges and milestones, deepening the sense of progression.

Prioritizing meaningful engagement

Prioritizing meaningful engagement

An important consideration was ensuring that streaks reflected meaningful engagement, not just activity. Reading required real interaction with content, and commenting was tied to participation rather than low-effort input. This aligned the system with the broader goal of encouraging higher-quality user-generated content.

Making progress visible

Making progress visible

Visibility played a key role in making streaks effective. Progress was surfaced within user profiles and supported through notifications, allowing users to track their activity and understand what to do next. This also reinforced the evolution of the profile from a static page into a central hub for gamification progress.

Beyond individual motivation, streaks contributed to a larger shift toward community-driven value. As users returned more consistently and engaged more actively, discussions became richer and more dynamic, supporting PhoneArena’s long-term goal of building a stronger, more participatory ecosystem.

What's next?

What's next?

Leaderboards and beyond

Leaderboards and beyond

With the foundation in place, the next step is to evolve the system into a more connected and competitive experience.

A key addition is the introduction of leaderboards, ranking users based on their contribution across the platform, from comments and activity to consistency over time. This builds on existing mechanics by making participation more visible and comparable.

In parallel, we are exploring visual indicators of status, such as tiered avatar borders that reflect a user’s standing across the experience, extending recognition beyond individual features.

Looking ahead, the focus remains on expanding the role of the community. As these systems develop, they support deeper crowdsourcing, enabling users to contribute more actively to discussions and the overall content ecosystem.

Closing thoughts

To sum up

To sum up

This project showed us how even small steps in gamification like titles and streaks, can meaningfully change user behavior when designed thoughtfully.

By combining design, psychology, and strategic community thinking, we laid the foundation for PhoneArena to grow into a platform where users don't just consume content, but also create value for the ecosystem.

Gamification at PhoneArena is still evolving, but early signals confirm we're on the right path: increasing engagement, building habits, and unlocking the community's full potential.
